Chapter 13

Exercises

Exercise 13.1: Your Team Management Development Plan (TMDP): Revisited

Objective

To review the action plan you developed at the beginning of the textbook for developing your teamwork and team management knowledge and skills.

Procedure

  1. Meet with your professor for the course, a mentor, a career advisor, or a personal friend. Bring your completed Team Management Skills Self-Assessment and action planning worksheet to the meeting.
  2. Note: Please use the worksheet posted on the textbook website for the steps below.

  3. Discuss the results of your action plan in terms of where you made improvements in your team knowledge and skills. Discuss actions for continuing to develop in these areas in the future and document them.
  4. Discuss the results of your action plan in terms of where you did not make as much progress as you would have liked in your team knowledge and skills. Discuss actions for making greater progress in these areas in the future and document them.
  5. Discuss the key practical takeaways from this exercise in terms of developing teamwork and team management skills and document them.

Exercise 13.2: Preparing for Team-Based Interview Questions

Objective

To develop skill in preparing responses to commonly asked job interview questions about teamwork and team management experiences.

Procedure

  1. Download the worksheet for completing this assignment from the text website.
  2. For each team-oriented interview question listed on the worksheet, write out what you feel is a good answer.
  3. Review your responses with one of your professors, your career advisor, mentor, or family member or friend who has some professional work experience. Revise your responses as needed based on feedback you receive from others.
  4. Ask the person who helped you with step 3 above to role-play a job interview by asking you each of the interview questions. You should articulate your responses to these questions. After the role-play is over, ask the person who was the interviewer to give you feedback on how to enhance your verbal responses to the interview questions.
  5. Based on step 4 above, practice your verbal responses to the interview questions and then repeat step 4 with the same person or someone else as the interviewer.
