About the Author

Etta R. Hollins is Professor and Kauffman Endowed Chair for Urban Teacher Education at the University of Missouri, Kansas City. Her recent publications include Culture in School Learning, 3rd Edition (2015), Rethinking Field Experiences in Preservice Teacher Preparation (2015), and Learning to Teach in Urban Schools (2012).

Presently, Dr. Hollins serves on the accreditation council for the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation. She has served as Vice-President for the American Education Research Association, Division K and Division G. She serves on the advisory board for several education journals and for the edTPA, the new teacher performance assessment.

Dr. Hollins’ professional experiences include 20 years as a teacher and administrator in public elementary and secondary schools and more than 25 years as a university-based teacher educator. She has served as a consultant for public schools on teaching diverse students and as an advisor for designing preservice teacher preparation programs for universities and state departments of education. Dr. Hollins has conducted two longitudinal studies aimed at enabling teachers to improve the academic performance of urban students in low-performing elementary schools.
