10 Things to Consider Before You Block a Scene

  1. Do any of the characters make an entrance or exit?
  2. Is there any movement dictated by a stage direction or dialogue?
  3. Is this scene an Act In or Act Out?
  4. Is there a particularly interesting visual that might start this scene that helps tell the story?
  5. What is the characters relationship to each other?
  6. Who has the power in the scene and does that change?
  7. Is there a story point that would be enhanced by movement, gestures, or handling a prop in the scene?
  8. Where is the source light in the room?
  9. Is there a physical direction where the interesting background is more interesting visually?
  10. How important is the scene to the overall plot?
